MINEFIELD CONSOLE / FIELD READING
A Minefield desk for deliberate moves
Open a classic grid with a protected first reveal, visible reveal and flag modes, preset or bounded custom boards, a timer, an unfinished-board record, and browser statistics.
- Safe first reveal
- 3 preset boards
- Custom grid: 8–30
The field: covered squares, numbers, decisions
A covered square can be revealed or marked. After the first reveal, every open number reports how many mines sit in its surrounding squares; zero-value areas expand through connected covered space.
COVERED — A choice still open
Covered squares remain inactive until you reveal or mark them.
NUMBER — A local count
A number counts mines in up to eight surrounding squares.
ZERO — An expanded opening
A revealed zero expands to connected empty squares and their numeric edge.
Four board starting points
The three preset boards use fixed grid and mine counts. The custom board keeps rows and columns between 8 and 30 and limits the mine count so the protected opening can be placed.
BEGINNER — 9 × 9 / 10 mines
A compact board for reading nearby counts.
INTERMEDIATE — 16 × 16 / 40 mines
A mid-size square field with more linked decisions.
EXPERT — 30 × 16 / 99 mines
A wide field with the classic 99-mine count.
CUSTOM — 8–30 rows and columns
Set bounded dimensions and a mine count that leaves a protected first opening.
The opening happens before the mine layout
Mines are not placed at page load. They are placed after the first Reveal action, with the chosen square and its available neighbours excluded from the mine candidates.
01 — Choose a square
Select a covered square in Reveal mode to begin the board.
02 — Place safely
The chosen square and surrounding available squares remain mine-free.
03 — Read the numbers
Use open counts to decide which covered squares to reveal or mark.
Two clear actions, plus keyboard and mouse paths
The editor keeps the current action visible: Reveal opens a square; Flag adds or removes a player marker. On desktop, right-click follows the same flag action.
REVEAL — Open a square
A mine ends the board; a zero expands its connected opening.
FLAG — Mark a suspicion
A flag is a player note and does not prove that a mine is present.
KEYBOARD — Focus and activate
Tab reaches squares; Enter or Space activates the focused square.
An unfinished board and local score sheet
The editor records an unfinished board and its shown statistics in browser storage. A cleared board can update the best time for its preset difficulty.
PROGRESS — Open board record
An active board, its elapsed time, and its covered states can be restored in the same browser.
RESULTS — Games and wins
The score sheet displays games, wins, a win rate, and recorded best times.
BOUNDARY — Browser-scoped
Clearing browser storage removes the stored board and statistics.
Reading the available boundaries
- The selected first square and its available neighbours are excluded when mines are placed.
- Flags are visual player markers; the editor does not treat a fully flagged board as a win.
- Preset counts are 9×9 / 10, 16×16 / 40, and 30×16 / 99; custom rows and columns remain between 8 and 30.
- A board is cleared only when every non-mine square has been revealed.
MINESWEEPER GUIDES
Choose the next logic layer
Move from reading one number to checking edge geometry and then to overlapping candidate sets. Each guide keeps the board limits explicit.
- Numbers, patterns and risk
Build reliable local counts before applying a familiar shape.
- Edge patterns and reductions
Check 1-2-X, 1-1-X and corner geometry from their actual neighbour sets.
- Subset logic and chains
Carry only forced group counts through overlaps and endgames.

Minefield console notes
Is the first click safe?
Yes. The first revealed square and its available neighbours are excluded before mines are placed.
What does a number mean?
It is the number of mines in the up to eight surrounding squares.
How do flags work?
Use Flag mode on a covered square, or right-click on desktop. Flags are player notes and do not confirm mine locations.
Which board sizes are available?
The editor provides 9×9 / 10 mines, 16×16 / 40, 30×16 / 99, and a custom option with 8–30 rows and columns.
What is stored?
An unfinished board and the displayed game statistics are stored in this browser. Clearing browser storage removes them.
Read one square at a time
Choose a board, begin with a protected reveal, use numbers and flags to work through the field, and review the local score sheet when the board ends.
